ASHA establishes the Valentine’s Day Committee to promote sexual responsibility
ASHA formed the Valentine’s Day Committee in the 1920’s, which focused on the promotion of a higher realization of what love, courtship, marriage and family ties meant. Ministers enthusiastically received the idea across the country and they incorporated the theme into their February sermons. ASHA produced and circulated over 15,000 valentine brochures and letters, which were quickly exhausted. With such promotions, ASHA faced many financial challenges, but John D Rockefeller, Jr. was so impressed by ASHA’s accomplishments, he offered to fund ASHA’s programs by contributing two dollars for every dollar ASHA raised from another source. The funds amounted to about $100,000 per year throughout the 1920’s.
