December 10-14, 2005
ASHA is hosting a session at the American Public Health Association’s 133rd Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, entitled, “Genital Herpes Epidemic: Rethinking Testing, Treatment, and Prevention.” Three presentations will be made on genital herpes:
  • Addressing the herpes epidemic through antibody testing: The who, what, when, and why. Gary Richwald, MD, MPH, former director of Los Angeles County STD Clinic and medical advisor for the Los Angeles HELP group.
  • When test results for herpes are positive: Clinical management, counseling, and prevention messages. Terri Warren, RN, MS, ANP, owner of Westover Heights Clinic and medical advisor for the Portland HELP group.
  • Organizational responses to the epidemic: Where do we go from here? Charles Ebel, Vice President of Health Program Resources, American Social Health Association.
October 31 - November 6, 2005
Are you in the know? Know Herpes. International Herpes Week Oct. 31 - Nov. 6
International Herpes Week 2005 will encourage people to ‘Know Herpes', whether they have been infected with the condition, are at risk of infection or are supporting a family member or friend with herpes. The campaign will also highlight the fact that many myths and misconceptions persist about herpes.

Charles Ebel, Chair of the IHA and Vice President Health Program Resources for ASHA, the organization that runs International Herpes Week, comments: “A better understanding of herpes can be helpful for people even if they believe they do not carry this particular virus. Because herpes symptoms can be confused with other ailments, many people do not seek help for herpes and so don't get the benefit of correct diagnosis and treatment. Education can help to change this. Secondly, public health is well served if people learn how herpes is spread. This is especially important for people who have herpes, so that they can take precautions when appropriate. Lastly, everyone wins if we can reduce the social stigma that surrounds this infection, which has been perpetuated by the many myths surrounding the virus, often causing needless anxiety for those affected.”

July 10-13, 2005
ASHA’s President and CEO, James R. Allen, MD, MPH, our Vice President of Health Policy, Deborah Arrindell, and our Vice President of Health Program Resources, Charles Ebel, represented ASHA at the 16th Biennial Meeting of the International Society of STD Research (ISSTDR) in Amsterdam. Dr. Allen co-chaired a satellite symposium on chlamydia and gonorrhea sponsored by Roche Diagnostics. His talk was entitled, “Creating effective STI control programs using new tools: Thinking outside the culture tube.” Deborah Arrindell presented a poster on “HPV as Political Football.”

March 31, 2005

ASHA recently hosted a roundtable summit for discussion of proper clinical scenarios for use of type-specific serologic tests for herpes and patient management algorithms in Seattle, WA. Researchers and clinical experts in the field of herpes attended and offered their input on guidelines proposed by: Anna Wald, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Medicine in Laboratory Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Washington, Medical Director of the University of Washington Virology Research Clinic, and Chair of ASHA’s Herpes Scientific Advisory Committee; Edward W. Hook, III, MD, Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama; Terri Warren, RN, MS, ANP, owner of Westover Heights Clinic in Portland, Oregon, a private clinic specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, and medical advisor for the Portland HELP group. Consensus guidelines and recommendations will be published in Fall 2005.
