- Human papillomavirus (HPV) is extremely common, with an estimated 5.5 million new infections occurring in the United States every year.
- Anyone who has ever had sexual intercourse can be infected and not know it; most often, HPV has no detectable symptoms.
- Cervical cancer can now be prevented in virtually 100% of cases. The key is regular screening.
- Misinformation and confusion surrounding HPV has been used to generate undue hysteria, cloud the issues, and discourage condom use.
- Increased federal funding to develop HPV health communications, evaluation and applied research and treatment is essential.
- HPV prevention and early detection would save millions of taxpayer dollars.
- Utilization of the Center will help prevent avoidable deaths from cervical cancer.
