LEARN ABOUT HPV > Policymaker Fact Sheet
  • The National HPV & Cervical Cancer Prevention Resource Center serves as a comprehensive place for the public, patients, providers and policy makers to turn for help in addressing the complexity of HPV issues.

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) is extremely common, with an estimated 5.5 million new infections occurring in the United States every year.

  • Anyone who has ever had sexual intercourse can be infected and not know it; most often, HPV has no detectable symptoms.

  • Cervical cancer can now be prevented in virtually 100% of cases. The key is regular screening.

  • Misinformation and confusion surrounding HPV has been used to generate undue hysteria, cloud the issues, and discourage condom use.

  • Increased federal funding to develop HPV health communications, evaluation and applied research and treatment is essential.

  • HPV prevention and early detection would save millions of taxpayer dollars.

  • Utilization of the Center will help prevent avoidable deaths from cervical cancer.

  • A common understanding of HPV and cervical cancer prevention is essential and will be facilitated by the Center.

  • Supplementing the public's knowledge around and access to new HPV technologies may ultimately curtail litigation around false negative Pap smear results.

  • Additional information is accessible via ASHA's Web sites at: www.ashastd.org and www.iwannaknow.org for teens.
