What is NBHAAD?
National Black HIV/AIDS
Awareness Day is a national mobilization effort designed
to increase the awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment among
Black Americans and mobilize Black communities.
The movement has four
main objectives that it hopes to impress upon the African
American community:
- Get tested for HIV and know your status
- Get educated about HIV/AIDS in the
local community
- Get involved with the community
- Get treated if you have tested positive
for HIV or been diagnosed with AIDS
Why is there a need?
- In 2002, HIV was the third leading cause of death for African Americans
between the ages of 25 and 44.
- African Americans comprise approximately 13
percent of the U.S. population, but almost half of the AIDS cases.
- In 2002,
African Americans accounted for 55 percent of deaths due to HIV.
- HIV is 100%
preventable!
Where Are the Events?
NBHAAD is a nationwide movement, with organizers planning activities and events
in more than 1,750 locales. In almost every major Black community, NBHAAD
events will happen (i.e. HIV testing, marches, rallies, etc.)
Who Are the Organizers?
NBHAAD is directed, planned and strategically overseen
by eight organizations/groups, commonly referred to as the Strategic Leadership
Council. This group works in partnership with Planners and Organizers all across
the United States to ensure that events and activities planned are organized
and delivered the best way possible.
