ASHA Wins CDC 'Partner in Public Health Improvement' Award

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - The American Social Health Association (ASHA) has been honored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with a 2005 Partner in Public Health Improvement award. Given at the request of the National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, the award recognizes ASHA for 18 years of service in operating the CDC National STD and AIDS Hotlines.

ASHA, a 91-year-old nonprofit dedicated to prevention of all sexually transmitted infections, launched The National VD Hotline in 1979 with support from United Way agencies and CDC. At that time, the hotline was staffed by a dedicated group of volunteers. The STD service created a spin-off National AIDS Hotline in 1986, with operations in Palo Alto, CA, and New York, NY.

In 1987 ASHA was awarded a full contract to run the rapidly expanding CDC National AIDS Hotline, then the largest health-related hotline in the world, with operations consolidated at ASHA headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Telephone-based counseling has played a vital role in helping individuals overcome the stigma surrounding AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, providing access to information and referrals in a confidential and often anonymous setting.

Over the past 18 years, ASHA assisted an average of more than 800,000 people annually with questions about HIV/AIDS and other STDs through the CDC-supported hotline service. Information was provided via telephone (both in English and Spanish), TTY, and email services. NSTDAH staff serviced the nation 24-hours a day, 7 days a week.

ASHA's role in the service was phased out in early 2005 when CDC consolidated more than 40 disease-specific hotlines into one toll-free service.

In 2004, the final full year ASHA staffed NSTDAH, ASHA provided service to over 4,000,000 people.

“It was an honor to have served CDC for almost two decades on this contract,” says William C. Parra, MS, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of ASHA. Parra received the award on ASHA's behalf at a ceremony on October 26, 2005 in Atlanta, GA.

This is the second time ASHA has been recognized by the CDC in the last three years. In 2002, ASHA was recognized as a Partner in Public Health Improvement for its service to the public through the National Immunization Information Hotline.
