You're not alone in feeling afraid, believe me. It isn't exactly clear just why HPV persists in some individuals and they have difficulty clearing the virus, but it could related to life-style issues (such as smoking, maybe poor diet, dealing with too much stress, or a combination of things). In other cases persistence of HPV may relate to having conditions that weaken the immune system and make the body's natural defenses against HPV less robust.
Fortunately, cancers related to "high risk" HPV can almost always be avoided and the key is regular screening for such diseases. For women, as an example, that means regular Pap testing. Ask your health care provider what they recommend for you in this regard if it's not clear.
