Fredo:

I am still a bit confused as I seem to hear mixed messages so I would be grateful if I could put my understanding of the situation and if you would carefully read and amend where necessary

thank you

My understanding is that according to received information from researchers etc that we can expect the majority of hpv infections either to be suppressed by the immune system or possibly even disappear altogether after 2 years.
This research exists for females but it is presumed similar exists for males?
Now, those that have not been dealt with by the immune system leaves the individual to more readily pass on the virus to someone else.
Those who have suppressed or disappeared have a zero to minimal chance of passing on the virus and the minimal element has been added in because science does not have the equipment to determine whether that small chance exists or not.
Therefore, the researchers err on the cautious

Is this a 'fair' summary?

regards

Not a bad summary, Richard. There is no way to prove if an HPV infection is contagious at a given point, or to determine "how" contagious it might be.

The best evidence indicates the virus is not likely to persist (although sometimes it does) and if one goes a year or so with no recurrences, then the likelihood of having recurrences or being contagious at that point has probably diminished dramatically, and one feels more confident in that the longer they go. I don't think there's a way to be more specific or precise, which is frustrating, but hopefully this offers some perspective.

All the best,
Fredo
