Hi,

I was here few months ago anxiously concerned about potentially contracting HSV-1 genitally through oral sex from a girl who didn't tell me she had HSV-1 orally. This was happened approx. Nov. of last year.

I suspected few small blisters and had it cultured at a local clinic and confirmed positive for HSV-1. They can separate HSV-1 and 2 through culturing process but can only confirm HSV-2 on blood test.

HERE IS MY QUESTION:

I just had blood test for HSV-1 & 2 and confirmed negative. The result is as follows:

Your tests are all normal.

HSV 1 Specific IgG <0.90 <0.90 Index
HSV 2 Specific IgG <0.90 <0.90 Index

Reference Range:
<0.90 Negative
0.90 - 1.10 Equivocal
>1.10 Positive

This test will differentiate between HSV 1 and HSV 2. It
should not be used to determine a disease state. If the test
is negative in cases of suspected HSV, the test should be
repeated in 4-8 weeks. Approximately 0.3% of HSV may be
deficient in the glycoprotein detected in this assay and
would give a false negative test result.

HIV1/HIV2 Antibody Screen NONREACTIVE NONREACTIVE

Can you advise me why I get negative on blood test after a yr and positive at the time of potential exposure? I had history of HPV so could HPV culture be misread of HSV positive due to HPV? I had warts before but never had outbreaks after treatment on Nov. of last yr.

I sincerely need professional help because I hear different stories from D.O., M.D., and so on which I am so sick of unclear explanation. Please help. Thanks!

Even the best blood tests still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections. You have a confirmed lesion culture for hsv1 correct? No reason for any blood testing to confirm that. Just keep in mind you can still contract hsv2 so it's important to have future potential partners tested to know their status.

lesion cultures depend on actual virus being present on the swab and being able to grow it out in the lab. No way your hpv was misdiagnosed as hsv1.

Well, are you saying that culture test is accurate that it's waste of time to get furthermore blood test?

My doctors are saying herpes blood test is pretty accurate and it's very unlikely to have negative result when you had an exposure close to a year now.

They also say culture test probably have been a false result.

Anyone had any conflicting experience??
