There is a good chance that herpes can lay dormant for years before you see an outbreak. However, even when there is no outbreak present, there is the chance of viral shedding in whihc Herpes virus is shed from the skin with no symptoms. Many people test positive for herpes but never have an outbreak.

Herpes usually comes out when it is triggered. This can be by stress, illness, weather, allergy , etc.

If a kid has herpes but Health Dept claims without symptons and lesions cannot test... what is teen to do?

I thought it was a series of blood test? But HD says no way of knowing?

Hey Buckie,

Yes, there are a couple of reliable antibody tests on the market. However, most health departments are still not offering antibody testing for herpes.

You can get one from a private lab or almost all doctors. As long as you test 12-16 weeks after your last possible exposure, the antibody tests should be indicative of whether one has herpes or not.

I hope this helps. :D
