Chlamydia is a common infection caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis.

It's the most frequently reported bacterial STI in the US. In 2002, 834,555 chlamydial infections were reported to CDC. This number does not represent the actual number of cases in the country. Under-reporting is substantial because most people with chlamydia do not know they are infected and are not tested for the infection. An estimated 2.8 million Americans are infected with chlamydia each year.

The bacteria target the cells of mucous membranes, including:

*the surfaces of the urethra, vagina, cervix, and endometrium (the membrane lining the uterus)

*the fallopian tubes

*the anus and rectum

*the lining of the eyelid

*though less likely, the throat (we don't see this happening very often).

Is this what you were looking for?

Dharma
