When I have an outbreak of herpes (I have both I & II), the symptoms even on Valtrex are extremely painful. Depending on the timing of the breakout and when the weekend falls, prompts whether or not I take a vacation day from work. When I run out of vacation, as I have this year, the thought of working through the roughest part of the symptoms or losing my job weigh heavily on my mind.

Does anyone know if a herpes outbreak is considered a "serious health condition" covered under the Family and Medical Leave Act?

I do not believe that it is.

Are you daily suppressive therapy? If so what and how much? How often are you getting ob's? What do you use for pain relief when you do get ob's?

I'm very sad to hear that.

It seems now that I'm in the beginning stages of menopause, the outbreaks are 4 - 5 times a year. I only take Valtrex during outbreaks due to the advice of my OB/GYN considering the other medications I take.

The ob's, as you call them, are no picnic and in combination with other physical maladies I have make some days unbearable. My arthritis seems to flare up and cluster headaches along with a laundry list of others. I'm sure I'm not alone but do feel that way sometimes. Just wish there were enough of us to get this on the FMLA "serious health condition" list.

Thank you for responding.

There aren't any interactions between most medications and the herpes antivirals. If you are having ob's that often and they tend to trigger everything else to flare up at the same time I"d definitely talk more to your doctor about suppressive therapy with one of the antivirals. Why have more ob's than you have to especially if they make you that miserable? I'm guessing your doctor probably isn't all that educated on the antivirals and is "afraid" of them like some doctors unfortunately are. There is over 25 years of safety with acyclovir - including long term use of it suppressively. It's well worth it instead of feeling that miserable that often. I'd be pretty assertive about giving them a try suppressively from the sounds of things.
