so i have yet to have an official diagnosis about what i have since my culture got sent out a few days ago, but my in an attempt to keep my single, painless sore dry to expedite healing, i noticed a faint odor coming from the tissue i had dabbed it with - it is distinct, not terribly strong, but definently noticeable. anyone have any experience with the dampness around a herpes sore causing an odor? and how long does the area remain moistish?

Did they prescribe antivirals for you anyways while waiting for the culture results to come back? Even if the culture is negative - be sure to follow up with a type specific herpes igg blood test in a few months to confirm your status since the lesion culture is frequently falsely negative.

Odor can be from many things. You didn't mention if you were male or female either.

oh - they didn't do herpes blood work - the doctor suggested simply the culture and then a syph test cause it looked like it could be syph but its just uncommon enough with college males (i'm a male) where he was pretty sure its herpes....the doctors didn't put me on an anti-viral because they said i really couldn't abort it this late in an outbreak and they just didn't think it was worth the money to get them.

i may be grasping at straws here, but is my outbreak highly atypical? - a completely painless sore (except during the test when he was jabbing it with the swab, but even then it didn't hurt much), there is only one sore, not a group, its not raised at all, in fact it is even slightly below skinlevel, more of a crater shape, plus i've had no flu type symptoms or anything like that. i'm approaching probably day 7 or 8 of this sore and it hasn't really improved in its look, maybe slightly less reddened, but for the most part it looks exactly the same as it did a week ago....does this sound like something else...i checked online and my state is in like the top 3 states for syphilis, so, this sounds kinda weird, but im really hoping i have syphilis since its easily treated....im probably just trying to convince myself its something that its not. but any insight would be appreciated!!

Yeah it does seem funny to be crossing your fingers and hoping for syphilis doesn't it? he he he

New herpes infections aren't always accompanied by the flu-like symptoms that folks are thinking of when they hear the flu. It's more like headache, neck stiffness/ache, photophobia etc - not the cough, runny nose, fever things most folks are thinking of. Also if you already have hsv1 orally ( whether you can recall an obvious cold sore ever or not ) it also takes the edge off a newly acquired genital herpes infection to make the symptoms milder.

Treating ob's only helps them to heal faster. It appears this one isn't bothering you too much so not treating it is ok. Definitely if your culture comes back negative for herpes - follow up with a blood test just to err on the side of caution - even if you do end up with syphilis instead. That way you'll have a baseline blood test for future testing to compare to.
