Hi Betsy,

You've do such wonderful work here.

My new partner has HSV 2. I have a couple of questions regarding safe sexual
activity an outbreak (which typically is on his penis or base of shaft):

1 Can we lie together, he on top of me, for example, with just underwear on
without risk? How thick does the underwear need to be? Do we both need to
wear underwear? Or can I get away with nothing and he, simply cotton underwear?

2 Can I still give him a hand job and just wash afterward?

3 Can he give me a hand job?

4. What do you consider relatively safe sexual practices during an outbreak?

Looking forward to hearing from you ......

have you been tested for herpes yet to know your own status?

How does your partner treat his herpes?

underwear is fine. Just not he wears a thong and you wear thong...he he he REAL underwear that covers more than 2 inches of your body.

hand jobs aren't an issue either as long as the skin on your hands is intact - no obvious wounds, no bitten or cry cuticles etc. Him manually stimulating you isn't an issue either.

Thanks Betsy,

I love how you approach this issue with such honesty and humour. We are lucky...

Just a couple of follow-up questions:

No, I haven't been tested for HSV 2 but should......actually will asap...

I know you said he should be wearing underwear during an outbreak..but is it OK if I wear nothing during his outbreak (I prefer sleeping without clothes) while he wears just underwear (more than a thong, of course)? Or do we both need to be wearing it?

Also, I wonder about shedding from his upper thigh......does this happen and is this a reason to wear underwear myself?

Thanks sooooooo much.........

just cuddling up next to each other at night isn't enough to transmit the virus. If you typically sleep in the nude, then do so. I do agree though, when he has an ob, him wearing underwear is probably a good idea just to err on the side of caution.

no, the skin on the thigh is too thick for the virus to shed from without an obvious lesion present. no worries there.

If he's not on suppressive therapy, ask him if he's interested in starting it for you. It's the best way to significantly reduce your risk of contracting hsv2 from him plus it decreases ob's in general so less times your sex life is disrupted from ob's too. If he doesn't have decent insurance to make valtrex affordable, use acyclovir.

Thanks sooooo much Betsy,

I have one more question....

My partner and I were reading through the HSV info on this website and others. One thing we didn't understand was.... in what location of the body the initial HSV 2 can occur. Some sites say anywhere in the boxer shorts region and others say only in the genitals/anal area. Which is true for the initial outbreak?

Thanks again for your kind patience.....

Genital herpes lesions can occur anywhere in the entire boxer short area.
