Here is the deal, I was visually diagnosed with genital herpes by 2 separate doctors in august 2008. For various reasons I only recently got blood work done. I had a swab done initially a few days after my symptoms appeared which was negative. Now I've had these blood test results:

15 months post diagnosis: hsv1/2 IgG antibody screen: negative

16 months: Immunoblot hsv 1/2 IgG: negative.
type 1 IgG: negative
type 2 IgG: negative

I am now being told to believe 100% that I was misdiagnosed and do not have herpes.

My concern is; I know there are a minority of people who will always test negative on Immunoglobulin based antibody screens. I'm worried I may be one of those people. I'm wondering if anyone know what this actual percentage of people is?

Also, would these people also be negative on the western blot, or no? I've read that the western blot looks for more proteins/antibodies and is therefore more likely to pick up infections that other antibody screens have missed. I'm considering paying for the western blot.

Additional information:

I have not had any real herpes symptoms since, but have had mild recurrent (usually not visible symptoms). These symptoms have NOT been helped/affected by Valtrex.

I'm seeing an infectious disease specialist on the 26th and am going to ask him this. In the meantime I'm wondering if anyone can add any additional information/experience.

Thanks a lot!

The odds of you having herpes and it not being picked up on 2 different blood tests are too low to even think twice about.

I think you are asking this on other forums online too right?

May I ask what symptoms you're having? And also how long after possible exposure did you wait to test?
