Hello, my boyfriend of 10 months has hsv2. I have hsv1 non symptomatic. He is on valtrex and lysine 1000mg per day. What are the chances of me catching it with or without condoms if we have sex 4x per week? I heard having hsv1 gives me some immunity. He has outbreaks less than once a year ( before valtrex). Thank you. I love him and want this to work but I don't want to catch it!

lysine doesn't do anything significant for herpes. The only dose that showed any effects at all was the 1000mg 3x/day dose. your bf is pretty much wasting his time taking it.

Having hsv1, doesn't give you any significant protection against contracting hsv2. What it does give you is good odds that should you contract it, you will have a much milder initial ob. Most folks who have hsv2, already have hsv1 which is part of why most folks who have hsv2, have no idea that they have it.

The number of ob's your bf has has no bearing on how contagious he is or isn't. Hsv2 sheds about the same amount no matter if you have 0 ob's a year or 10. Daily suppressive therapy with valtrex though will reduce shedding considerably ( 80-90% on average ) as well as recurrences ( 70% on average ) so that in general your sex life is interrupted less often from herpes ob's.

If you two did nothing but avoid sex anytime he has obvious genital symptoms, you are 90-92% likely each year NOT to contract hsv2 from him. His taking daily suppressive therapy along with using condoms takes you up to a 97-98% average odds each year of NOT contracting hsv2 from him. In general very good odds don't you think?

keep asking questions as you have them!
