Hi. Ive been living with HSV 2 for almost 3 years now. Im almost done with school and soon want to start a family. What are the chances that I will pass it on to my baby? Ive seriously considered not having children because of this.

since you had hsv2 prior to becoming pregnant, if when you deliver you have no obvious signs of lesions, you have a less than 1% risk of transmitting hsv2 to your baby. Certainly not a reason not to start a family!

the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com has a whole section on herpes and pregnancy. the booklet is free to read online or print out at home. Also Terri's new book "the good news about the bad news" has even more info on herpes and pregnancy ( under $15 on amazon ).

keep asking questions!

Betsy,

If you have a C-Section is there a chance at all to pass the virus on to the baby? I'm curious as I too want to have a family someday soon.

No obvious lesions at the time of delivery, no reason for a c section.

1 out of every 4 women in the US has genital herpes. You really can have a normal, healthy pregnancy and delivery with genital herpes I assure you!

But, what if you are shedding during delivery? Is there enough virus during shedding to harm the baby?

you pass on protective antibodies to the baby during pregnancy that help protect baby if any contact with virus occurs. the risk is really low as I already posted about.
