Hi Betsy,

What is considered appropriate and normal handwashing after using the restroom? I think I go way overboard.

Thank you!

is 20 seconds to allow time to kill the virus or is it to make sure you cover all areas of the hands?

Hi Concerned Mommy,

I struggle with many of the same fears as you do. Soap kills HSV on contact so don't worry so much! I have asked Betsy about that before, too.

Think of it this way - 20 seconds is about what it takes to actually wash your hands thoroughly. I think they tell people that b/c so many people think that if they put soap in the palm of their hand, rub them together for 1 second, and rinse it's effective. That helps me put it in perspective.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you for your reply. How old are you kids? My son is 18 months. How are you managing your fears? This has been very hard for me and I know I go overboard with my precautions. That is why it would be helpful to chat with someone else in my same boat. :-)

Thanks again!

I struggle with OCD, so it's not easy. Little facts like knowing that it is "killed" instantly with soap makes me feel better. My doctor (and Betsy) have both reassured me that there are no known cases of a child getting it from a parent (other than abuse). I try to remind myself of that and the fact that there are a ton of people who have it and don't know and it's not like their children are getting it all the time (or we would hear about it).

I pray all the time for a cure and for better treatment. For me, I have a lot of OBs, so it makes it tough. I am on suppression right now, but hate always taking meds.

I also struggle with OCD and get lots of support from Betsy and my therapist. I sounds like we are very similar. I wish you the BEST!!
