I am writing with a question regarding transmission of HSV2 if the carrier has oral lesions present. If the carrier engages in mouth to mouth kissing with someone who does not have HSV2, can it be transmitted to them through this means? Thanks very much in advance for your assistance!

if someone had hsv2 orally then yes they could transmit it to someone else's oral area through kissing.

perhaps some more details about why this question would help me help you more?

Dear Betsy,

Thanks for your prompt reply. The person doing the mouth-to-mouth kissing has genital HSV2, and perhaps oral HSV1. The HSV1 has not been diagnosed, though the genital HSV2 has been diagnosed. Now that genital HSV2 person has an oral lesion, she is concerned with transmitting genital HSV2 through the oral lesion by mouth-to-mouth kissing. Is this possible? I know you can spread HSV1 mouth to genital, so am not sure if you can spread HSV2 from a site which is not the primary site as well. Thanks so much for your input on this.

I'll take this as it not being likely that genital HSV2 cannot be transmitted orally. Thanks again. It's wonderful to have such an authoritative, responsive service like this one. Thanks again!

genital herpes is transmitted through direct skin on skin contact with the genital area. it's not also shedding orally when there are active genital lesions.
