Hi all,
A month ago I began sleeping with the man I now live with. He reassured me he didn't have anything, but several days after our first encounter I got tested for everything anyway. All was neg at the time. April 8th I woke up burning... and have had several symptoms this last week... like redness, white bumps that are now ulcers that are lightly bleeding, flu-like feeling, a lot of discharge. Last Tuesday I went to see a nurse prctioner and she suggested waiting until the 6 week mark after our first night together then go get blood tests hsv 1 igm and hsv 2 igm and igg. So I have to wait until the 27th for the tests.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hey. Any input is appreciated. Some of the sores/ulcer ares just started lightly bleeding last night. Is that normal with hsv?

Thanks

It's unfortunate that you received such substandard care :( I'd make a complaint to the clinic you went to!!

First of all if you went in with obvious lesions they should've been cultured right then and there and you should've been started on treatment immediately to help speed healing. This NP is not following the 2006 cdc std guidelines for herpes ( no idea if you are in the US or not ).

Don't bother with the igm blood test - it's a waste of time and money. This link is to a post dr hunter handsfield made on it - he's a respected std specialist - http://racoon.com/dcforum/support/20242.html

So meanwhile your bf should go get himself a type specific herpes igg blood test to see what his status is. If he's hsv2+ then you can pretty much bet that that's what you have to. If he's only hsv1+ or completely negative - then go ahead and get yourself a type specific herpes igg blood test now to get a baseline result. It could be that this is just your first obvious recurrence of a prior infection or it could be hsv1 genitally. As I said the NP did you a disservice by not culturing and typing you :(

Yes I am in America. After researching on HSV it threw me off as well that she didn't do a culture. She did write me a prescription for acyclovir, but I haven't taken any as of yet. I have epilepsy and missed some of my meds for that last week, and I read acyclovir can make one more seizure prone.

I read that about the igm as well... not being a worthy test. At least she did order an igg for hsv2. If I do not get what I feel is treatment from her, I will ask for a referral to a gyn.

Wow Betsy, how are you so knowledgeable?

Thanks ;)

I'm not sure where you read that acyclovir increases seizure activity - it's not something I've ever read anywhere ( especially not if you are a fairly young and otherwise health adult ). It's ok not to ever take the acyclovir if you don't want - all it does is help to speed the healing of lesions. Just know that it works best when taken early into an ob so it's always better to take it at the first sign of a recurrence whether than waiting a few days, letting the pain get unbearable and then taking it ( just for future recurrences ).

How do I know so much? I played a heck of a lot of doctor growing up ;)
