I have been taking Valtrex daily for couple years approximately. I still get some outbreaks. Not sure how more often I might have them if I stopped taking the antiviral daily.

In any case, I have read that antivirals could become less effective at suppressing the herpes. Is this true?

oh it absolutely isn't true at all!! Glad you found a reputable site to ask your questions at and get info from


the rates of antiviral resistance with the herpes antivirals is still less than 1% for otherwise healthy folks. It happens but not often - it's not like antibiotics.

we have info on folks taking suppressive therapy with acyclovir non-stop for over 25 years now. No long term side effects. No long term resistance. I myself even have been on suppressive therapy more than I haven't in the 25 years I've had hsv2.
