Is it possible to transmit herpes to the genitals from touching a cold sore on your own mouth and then touching your own penis?

Someone I know took a blood test for HSV-2 because he had a lesion on his penis. This is the first lesion that has ever appeared on his penis, but he has cold sores occassionaly in his mouth. The test came back positive for a new HSV-2 infection. Also, what does it mean when the results show a "new" infection? Is a new infection considered to be an active lesion or newly infected with the virus only?

He and his partner have been in a monogamous relationship for 8 years. His partner has never had any signs of herpes but has not been tested. Can a herpes lesion take over 8 years to appear? Could his partner be infected from before the relationship (without knowing it) but him never get infected until recently? How likely is that? Thanks for your information.

no, you aren't going to transmit your own hsv1 oral infection to the genital area. not that much virus present that just simply touching a cold sore and then touching your penis is going to transmit it as well as once you have hsv1 in one location, it gives you significant protection against contracting it in another location.

if your friend had a herpes igm test, they had a very flawed test and can't assume anything. their partner also needs tested. I will gladly help them if you can convince them to post here where I can ask them first hand the questions I'd need to ask them to help them with their situation.
