Would you please explain to me the difference between Anti-viral (taken daily) and Suppressive Therapy? Are these the same medication or 2 different types of medication and should i be taken both if i am sexually active? Thank you for your help. I am new to the herpes infection.

when you treat each ob as they occur ( episodic therapy ), it helps to reduce the time that you have symptoms with that ob. it does nothing to prevent future recurrences or shedding in between obvious lesions.

daily suppressive therapy is when you take one of the herpes antivirals every single day, regardless of if you have symptoms or not, to help reduce transmission to a partner, reduce viral shedding in general as well as to reduce the number of recurrences you have each year.
