I've read some of the posts on this board regarding transmission of HSV 1 to the genitals through receiving oral sex, but I'm still looking for some answers/clarification.

I recently had unprotected oral sex performed on me, (I am male) by a woman on three occasions. She then told me afterwards that she has had HSV for years. She takes suppressive therapy, and claims to never have transferred it to any of her former partners. I did not ask her what type of HSV she was diagnosed with, or if she ever had an oral HSV1 outbreak. She had no visible symptoms at the time.

I was diagnosed with HPV a couple of years ago, and even though I should've known better, I let this happen. It's my first contact of any type with someone who I know is HSV positive, but the reality is that I've likely come in contact with HSV1 (or even HSV2) without knowing it over the years.

It's been several weeks since this happened, and I don't have any lesions or visible symptoms. I have noticed some itching, but I think it could be psychosomatic. I don't really know.

Do you have any guidance with respect to the possibility of me contracting HSV1 genitally from this contact? Should I wait about three more months, and get a blood test? I've never been tested for HSV, and have never had a cold sore.

odds are her herpes is genital if she's on daily suppressive therapy.

If you didn't show symptoms by now, no reason to continue worrying. Hsv1 genitally tends to present with pretty classic and obvious symptoms that you wouldn't miss.

No reason to wait for blood testing just to see what your general status is if you are interested.

The general rule of thumb is, if your clothing is off, a condom should be worn. It protects you, saves you worrying as well as saves you from frequent testing for std's. Even though the risk of a std in general from oral sex is pretty low, it's certainly not zero and a condom for oral, both giving and receiving, is always in your best interest
