Chlamydia is a serious public health issue. Each year in the U.S. over 1 millions cases of the disease are reported, but the actual number of cases is thought to be at least twice that!
Chlamydia is often without symptoms and, especially for women, this can be a big problem. Left untreated, about 40% of cases in females will lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), where the infection spreads to the upper genital tract and can cause a host of reproductive health problems such as chronic pelvic pain, ectopic (tubal)pregnancies, scarring of the fallopian tubes, and possibly infertility. For this reason, it's recommended that all sexually active women 25 and under be tested annually for chlamdyia.
