I had a culture done in 1989. The culture came back positive or in other words "HSV isolated". No typing as to type 1 or 2 was done and at the time I had no lesions or signs of herpes except a slight irritation. I had just had a laparoscopy for a pap smear that showed a precancerous condition due to HSV. My doctor at the time had me applying Effudex cream in the area which can cause irritation as well. The doctor said he could see nothing at all and that there was nothing there to culture. I insisted so he just swabbed the area. As of today, I have never had a "breakout" nor has my husband of 9 years contracted Herpes. Is it possible that the test wasn't reliable or was misread or something?

Any information would be helpful, thanks.

usually precancerous changes on the cervix are due to hpv, not herpes.

you had a + culture so you know you have genital herpes. At this point both you and your partner should get type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what and go from there.
