I was recently diagnosed with herpes and thought I was dealing with the news pretty well but I I’m still feeling uncertain about some things. I just finished an initial 10 day prescription for 400mg of acyclovir 3 times a day and am now taking the twice a day suppressive therapy (My partner tested negative after my diagnosis and I’d like to keep it that way).

I’ve been told that the sores have fully healed when the scabs fall off on their own. The thing is I can’t tell if I’ve healed. All of my sores were deep enough in my vagina that I can’t visually determine if the scabs have fallen off or even formed. Are there any other indicators that the sores have healed? I’ve heard two to four weeks is the normal healing time but two to four weeks from what? The point when the sores manifest? After they stop hurting?

It was also explained to me that the suppressive therapy helps reduce shedding of the virus when I don’t have symptoms and should significantly reduce the number of reoccurrences. What wasn’t clarified is if I can still have reoccurrences while taking the suppressive therapy or only after I discontinue it. And if an outbreak does occur while on the suppressive therapy what do I do about it?

I was also curious if anyone could recommend an over the counter painkiller that helps. I tried taking Advil and Ibuprofen but still spent 6 days doubled over in pain.

Let's start at the beginning - how were you diagnosed? do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally?

what testing did your partner have?
