Both my boyfriend and I are very new to this, and I'm sure this has been asked many times, so sorry about the redundancy. When both partners have HSV2 (he also has HSV1, but I don't), are we okay not using condoms except when there is an outbreak? And when there is an outbreak, do we refrain from all sex (even oral) until it's cleared up? Thanks for this website--I have learned so much from it.

Be sure to check out our herpes forum if you haven't already - lots of similar questions there too :)

It's not an issue when you both have hsv2. Just don't perform oral on active lesions to err on the side of caution. You can even have sex when you have recurrences if it's not painful. You won't "ping pong" herpes back and forth and you won't get it "worse" or anything like that. It's really a non-issue when you both have it other than the inconvenience of recurrences.

your partner's hsv1 isn't an issue either. hsv2 protects you from hsv1 quite a bit, just not the other way around.

keep asking questions!
