Hello, everyone! I am trying to get health insurance (COBRA will be running out soon), and I was declined because of herpes (type 2). Has anyone had any experience with this? I'd like to find some medical articles which discuss how herpes is not a major medical issue. I was under the impression that insurance companies could not discriminate if you have HIV -- how about herpes? Thanks so much! Anne

Have you tried asking to talk to one of their representatives and asking them why they felt that having hsv2 was a reason to turn you down? Also how long have you had hsv2?

I just found out about the decline a few days ago and am going to send them a letter, but I was hoping to have some medical studies/documentation to include in it. Good idea to try to talk with someone, also. I have only had hsv2/been diagnosed about 6 months.

I'd call - not write a letter. Argue it out with someone over the phone - make them explain to you why it's a reason to turn you down.

There's no reason to turn you down because of herpes but insurances use every reason imagineable for doing so. Some of their reasonings are ridiculous- I heard not that long ago of someone being turned down for being a female in the high risk of unplanned pregnancy range - is that bogus too or what? geesh. I hate insurance companies!!!

What are the dangers in using my health insurance to get medication for someone else? My boyfriend neeeeds to quit smoking, he smokes like more than a pack a day! But! He doesnt have health insurance, and i have great health insurance through my job. Are there any potential dangers to getting him a prescription for chantix on my health insurance ? (i socially smoke so it wouldnt be a huge stretch at the docs office) Could it increase my insurance costs to admit that i am a "smoker" to insurers?

You are not legally allowed to obtain a prescription for yourself and then give it to someone else to use. Sorry.
