What is sexual health
Defining sexual health is a difficult task, as each culture, sub-culture,
and individual has different standards of sexual health.
The World Health
Organization defines sexual health as "a state of physical, emotional,
mental and social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence
of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and
respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility
of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination
and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights
of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled."
ASHA believes that sexual health includes far more than avoiding disease or
unplanned pregnancy. We also believe that having a sexually transmitted infection
or unwanted pregnancy does not prevent someone from being or becoming sexually
healthy. We hope you will explore our site to learn more about some of
the ways to actively engage in your own sexual health.
