Clinical Research Study with an Investigational Medication for Recurrence of Genital Herpes

Purpose of Study

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication for genital herpes compared with valacyclovir (or Valtrex®) and placebo (an inactive substance) during recurrences (outbreaks) of genital herpes.

Length of Study

Your participation in this study includes up to 12 visits. Once you have an outbreak, you will have at least 7 visits in 17 days

Study Details

You will be asked to record your herpes symptoms in a diary and you will be asked to swab the area of your lesions during the study.

If you qualify to participate in the study you will receive all study-related examinations, lab tests and the study medication at no cost. You will also receive compensation for your time and travel.


Selected Study Eligibility Requirements

  • Female or male 18 years or older (19 years or older in Alabama)
  • Diagnosed with genital herpes
  • History of 4 or more outbreaks of genital herpes during the past 12 months
  • Willing to use adequate birth control (such as oral contraceptives or condoms) during the study
If you took suppressive therapy within the past 12 months, you will not qualify to participate in this study unless you stopped taking the suppressive therapy and you had an outbreak within the past 3 months.

Selected Conditions that would Prevent a Volunteer from Participating in this Study:
  • HIV positive or weakened immune system
  • Women who are pregnant or nursing
  • Currently taking warfarin (Coumadin®) or phenytoin (Dilantin®)
  • Use of another investigational medication within the past 30 days
  • History of kidney or liver problems
  • History (within the past six months) of substance abuse
